St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry
Jacksonville's Saint Vincent de Paul food pantry, which provides supplemental food for the home, has been steadily growing. Our October report to the East Texas Food Bank recorded 901 people receiving food. This number is comprised of 42.5% Caucasian, 42% African American, 14% Hispanic, and 1.5% other nationalities. These clients are the elderly on fixed incomes (123 in October), the working poor, the unemployed, and those with physical or mental disabilities.
The food pantry, largely funded through the first of the month SOCIAL MINISTRIES collection, purchases food from the East Texas Food Bank in Tyler. ETFB in Tyler is regional and provides food to 215 agencies like ours in the East Texas area. Your generous donations, made directly to the OLOS SOCIAL MINISTRIES, focuses on families here in the Jacksonville area.
Our food pantry is open weekly on Thursday from 10 a. m. to 1 p. m. The clients arrive at our parish food pantry (located in the old church). Intake begins at 10:00 a.m.. At intake, our volunteers greet them one at a time to assess and record their needs, after which they go down to the food pantry to receive their monthly supplemental food from more SVdP volunteers.
Your generosity is appreciated and needed. Please consider volunteering your time, as little as 1 and 1/2 hours on a Thursday, either doing intake or distributing the groceries for the families who come to us in need or every other Wednesday, around 9:30 a.m. to help unload our ETFB food deliveries. Also, please consider joining our St. Vincent de Paul Society. We meet the first Monday of every month after 12:15 mass.
Most of all, please pray for our ministry and those we serve every day.
